Which Is It Really?
Do you think Melanie is trying to make the rooftop home more comfortable and attractive because she truly thinks it's a better place for the baby than in Tonya's house, or because she's competitive? Do you think this disagreement over what's best for Ivy is actually more about Melanie's ego, or do you think it's more motivated by her genuine care for the baby? Do you think Melanie and Tonya should compromise, or do you think one of them is right?

I would guess Melanie has a bit of both in her, she think it's a better place AND she's competitive, but it does seem more of an ego thing that's driving her. I think they should compromise cause all their fighting's gonna do is confuse and upset Ivy even more.

Does a higher-level concern for others perhaps grow out of a more selfish desire to be liked? I read in the New York Times about a study that said kids with big siblings or exposed to older children were more likely to develop empathy. So, I think that, yes, she's worried about her ego, but I don't think that says anything bad about her as an eight-year-old. She does know that treating the baby better would be a good thing!
