Predictability
Ivy seems happier now that she's developed a routine, but she also seems to like some degree of variety. In your own life, do you prefer a predictable schedule that keeps you comfortable, or do you feel that a routine is more like a being in a rut? Do you feel more comfortable if you know what will happen day to day, or is it better to always be surprised (even if some of the surprises are nasty ones)?

What's funny is that I kind of think I go both ways (big surprise, right?). On the one hand, I am a planner. I draw diagrams. I make charts. I love my scale ruler and graph paper and spreadsheets are awesome! And who has more outlines for unwritten stories or partially drawn comics?
I plan. I plot. I devise. I should be all about routines and schedules, but I can't stand routine. I try so hard for so many things but eventually the monotony is choking and I just skip it. Freelance, what a beautiful term it is!
That's why I SO much want to make a decent living indulging in my art. A career that could be done anywhere at anytime and perfect for us manic depressive schizophrenics. I want to be able to sell my paintings, publish my stories, and post my comics to the thrill of millions and then hop in a car or on a bike and just GO. Go anywhere, go everywhere, but fly on a whim and see everything! I want to lock up my house, pack my messenger bag with my e-gear and a backpack with travel toiletries and undies, hit the airport and hop on the first thing going. That "degree of variety" would be a bit of nirvana.
Oh, and when I go... I'll try to be better at taking pictures. ;D

I have to agree with SHO! on this one... I sort of go both way as well. I plan everything, but sticking to the plan makes me restless. I'm a bit of a control freak, so I have to know everything that's going to happen and the way it'll happen--yet at the same time, I find that impossibly dull. I like to be surprised. Knowing everything that's going to happen is boring. Er, what the hell, me? Basically, I'm constantly making plans and not following through with them. =P
(Of course, there are exceptions, like when I'm writing. I don't just decide not to write a book anymore because I'm bored with it. That would be awful. Wee, stability! ;D)

I like to know what is going to happen day to day in the way of planning to go somewhere specific or do a certain thing; but then when I get to that place I hope that a bunch of good random things happen to bleed out the predictability and mundane. Like for example: Planning to go to school/an appointment etc, what to do before the scheduled moment, and then in amongst/afterwards who knows what could happen. Life has so much potential to be wonderfully random and therefore make a day great. It's all due to everyone's choices in where they put their feet! You go down a certain pathway you didn't necessarily have to choose and there you meet someone cool you know and you hang out instead of just doing some mundane thing you planned, like going home or whatever. If you always know how the story is going to end day to day it's enough to make a person very depressed if your story isn't one you want to be experiencing over and over you have to do things differently, make a plan that is as random as... something random happening! hehe. It is nice to have a security blanket of comfort to know what you're gonna be doing each day though even if it can be mundane, sometimes you can think "Well at least I don't have to be worried about finding something to do, this thing is already here". I guess for people who have jobs they don't like this is one way they look at it. This thread reminds me of the Tropfest trailer which gives a message about mundane routines: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zp-LR7kz5U&feature=channel
